After 21 years working as a paralegal, Doreen found herself at an unexpected crossroads. Being laid off wasn’t part of the plan — but it became the turning point she didn’t know she needed.
Having spent most of her career in the legal field, she knew she wasn’t ready to leave it behind. The courtroom still felt like home. After serving on two jury duty panels, Doreen began paying closer attention to the court reporter — the focus, the precision, the quiet responsibility of capturing every word. The role intrigued her.
That curiosity turned into a bold decision: pivot her career, take a risk, and pursue court reporting.
Now testing at 180 words per minute in Plaza College’s Court Reporting program, Doreen describes the experience as both challenging and incredibly rewarding. “There have been times when it felt overwhelming,” she admits. “But every challenge has pushed me to grow and build confidence in my abilities.”
Court reporting demands daily discipline. Balancing coursework, practice, and life outside of school isn’t always easy, but Doreen approaches it with intention. She prioritizes her time, sets realistic goals, and reminds herself that the sacrifices she’s making now are investments in her long-term success. Giving herself grace along the way has been just as important as staying committed.
One habit that sets her apart? She takes every single test — even when she feels unprepared.
“I don’t let failure shake me,” she says. “Each attempt is a step forward, not a setback.”
That mindset has carried her through the tough days. After making such a major career pivot, Doreen was determined to prove to herself that she could succeed. For her, steno is about consistency, not perfection. Trusting the process — and remembering why she started — keeps her moving forward.
After graduation, she sees herself right where it all began: in the courtroom. This time, not as a paralegal — but as a court reporter, contributing to the legal process with accuracy, professionalism, and dedication.
From unexpected change to purposeful new direction, Doreen is proving that it’s never too late to start again — and succeed.
