Medical Assisting

Certificate

From small physicians’ offices to large hospital centers, Medical Assistants are a truly invaluable part of any medical organization. At the heart of Plaza College’s Medical Assisting program is a focus on applied clinical experience that prepares our students to work side by side with doctors to treat patients and keep healthcare centers running efficiently.

WHAT IS MEDICAL ASSISTING?

Of the many vital members of the healthcare team providing critical patient care is the Medical Assistant. Medical Assistants serve as liaisons for patients of all ages, performing critical duties like drawing blood, taking medical histories, performing laboratory tests and EKGs, and managing the office through patient interactions.

YOU MIGHT LIKE THIS PROGRAM IF:

  • You know you want to work in healthcare but also want the flexibility to choose to work either on the clinical side, the administrative side, or both!
  • Beginning your career in only about 1 year is appealing to you.
  • You’d eventually like to continue your education and earn higher level degrees, but earning your associate’s and getting some work experience under your belt first sounds like a good idea.

This program of study is designed to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to perform clinical and administrative tasks at a medical facility.  Study includes a practicum experience along with specialized coursework providing instruction in medical terminology and concepts, basic clinical and laboratory applications and procedures, coding, billing, reimbursement methodologies, records management, medical ethics, document processing, and writing.

Our professors are subject matter experts in their fields. Throughout the program, they’ll share their knowledge with you, providing a strong foundation and hands-on experience to prepare you for a successful healthcare career.

The Medical Assisting program consists of 40 credits of Liberal Arts and Science, clinical, and Allied Health courses. Upon successful completion of required coursework, students will have the opportunity to opt to take a certificate exam, such as the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) exam.
