Each semester, the School of Court Reporting at Plaza College presents its Steno Stars series, an initiative that brings accomplished professionals in court reporting and captioning to campus to share their experiences and insights with current and prospective students.
This February, Plaza College welcomed Stephanie B. as our featured Steno Star, where she returned to her alma mater to speak with students about her career journey and her work in the field of court reporting.
Stephanie currently serves as a Grand Jury Stenographer at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, where she plays an essential role in the justice system by producing accurate records of grand jury proceedings. During her presentation, Stephanie shared valuable insights about the responsibilities of working in a district attorney’s office, the importance of precision and professionalism, and the many opportunities available within the court reporting profession.
What makes Stephanie’s story particularly inspiring is the unique path that led her to this career. Before entering the field of court reporting, Stephanie spent thirty years in the performing arts as a choreographer, teacher, and performer, working on both stage and film. After playing the role of a Court Reporter on a television show, she found herself intrigued by the stenography machine and decided to begin a new professional chapter by pursuing court reporting.
Stephanie enrolled in the Court Reporting program at Plaza College, where her dedication and determination quickly set her apart. During her time as a student, she was honored with the Steno Star Award for Distinguished Achievements, recognizing her perseverance and outstanding accomplishments in the program.
In speaking with students, Stephanie reflected on how the discipline, focus, and commitment she developed throughout her career in the arts translated directly into her success as a court reporter. She encouraged students to stay persistent throughout their training and reminded them that the skills they are building now will open the door to rewarding and meaningful careers.
Stephanie’s visit provided students with a firsthand look at the profession and served as a powerful reminder that career paths are rarely linear. Her story highlights the value of lifelong learning, resilience, and the courage to pursue new opportunities.
We are grateful to Stephanie for returning to Plaza College to share her experience and inspire the next generation of court reporters.
