Building a strong foundation for a future in Dental Hygiene through discipline, discovery, and purpose.

For Erikka, dental hygiene wasn’t about memorizing facts or completing assignments—it was about discovering how her skills could directly improve someone’s health and confidence. She quickly realized that Plaza College’s program offered more than textbooks and lectures, providing meaningful, hands-on experiences that allow students to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. One such opportunity is Plaza College’s on-campus Community Dental Clinic, where students work with real patients from the New York community and witness the impact of their care firsthand.

“From the moment I started the program, I felt like I was finally stepping into a path that aligned with my passion for healthcare and hands-on learning.”

Now enrolled in Plaza’s Allied Health program and completing pre-requisites for a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, Erikka has come to appreciate the careful balance of science, precision, and compassion required to care for patients effectively. She notes that one of the most challenging aspects was learning to manage the fast-paced coursework while holding herself to high academic standards. There were moments when the material felt overwhelming, but pushing through those challenges revealed her own resilience and determination.

“Even when I feel unsure, I don’t give up – I slow down, refocus, and keep moving forward.”

During these challenging moments, Erikka found reassurance in her prerequisite courses, which confirmed she was on the right path even when the material was dense and keeping up felt difficult. With guidance and support from her professors, mentors, and peers, she was able to fully grasp the material and see its wide-ranging applications — reinforcing the important role she will play as a dental hygienist.

“Learning how oral bacteria can impact overall health changed the way I see Dental Hygiene and confirmed that this field is exactly where I belong.”

In one eye-opening class, Erikka discovered how oral bacteria influence overall systemic health, deepening her sense of purpose in the field. It was a lesson she would never forget, and one she might have missed had she given up or strayed from her path. Thanks to Plaza College’s structured pathway, Erikka is no longer intimidated by the challenges of demanding coursework. She now knows she can rely on both herself and Plaza’s supportive community to navigate even the most difficult moments.

As she prepares to enter the Dental Hygiene program, Erikka is especially eager to develop hands-on clinical skills, including scaling, polishing, and patient assessment. She is also interested in learning more about periodontal disease and the importance of early detection in preventing serious health concerns.

“If I can help someone stay healthy starting with their smile, then I’m doing something meaningful.”

Erikka encourages new students to trust themselves, stay organized, and seek support when needed. She emphasizes that struggling does not mean failing, but rather signals growth and progress.

“I want to lead with compassion, curiosity, and a genuine desire to make a difference.”

Erikka’s journey highlights the academic rigor and supportive learning environment of Plaza College’s Allied Health program, preparing students to advance with confidence, curiosity, and a strong commitment to compassionate care.
