Martina Harris is a student in the Allied Health Science program, with the goal of applying for the Bachelors of Nursing. For Martina, being nominated for the Student Spotlight represents everything she is striving for. “This program has presented challenges but I’ve overcome them. This recognition is the assurance that I’m where I’m supposed to be and to keep moving ahead.” Prior to being a student at Plaza College, Martina was grieving the sudden loss of a sibling and healing from a severe car crash simultaneously. Both incidents happening at the same time gave her a greater appreciation for life. “I decided I wanted to pursue the opportunity to elevate my education from previously being a Nurse Aid to becoming a Registered Nurse. I realized what a privilege it was to be independent; to walk, to prepare food by myself, get dressed, and do my hair. This realization pushed me to go in this direction.”
Her most memorable experience has been working with Director O’Connor. “I’ll never forget when she said ‘whatever it is we are here to help you, there’s always a solution. She gives me confidence that we have her support. She is my advisor and has been my Professor. Whenever there’s an issue or a question I call her first.” Director O’Connor says, “I have known Martina as her instructor and academic advisor in the Allied Health Sciences program. From the very first meeting, she impressed me with her determination to accomplish her academic and professional goals. Martina has encountered some challenges in her academic journey, but refuses to allow these temporary setbacks to derail her. She is a strong, intelligent, determined young woman who will go far as a healthcare professional.” This semester she looks forward to redeeming herself in biochemistry, a course she is retaking with Professor Leon. “I initially wasn’t able to complete the course. Now I’m back and fully engaged. I feel more connected and dedicated. I’m showing up, mentally present, and participating. I also look forward to participating in the mock interviews with Career Services.”
Martina knew that Plaza College was always her first choice when it came to pursuing her education. “There’s never been a plan B. I shared this with Director Niebling. At Plaza there is always accessibility with tutoring and they will work with you to be flexible with your schedule. All Professors are very responsive. There are so many resources for your success.” Professor Salta says, “Ms. Martina Harris is a conscientious student. She has excellent communication skills and cares about the quality of her work. Ms. Harris is respectful and always professional in her interactions with me and her classmates in all the courses she has had with me. She has been a pleasure to have in my courses over the semesters.” Martina’s dream job is to work as a nurse in the ICU. “When my son was one year old, he was sick and the ICU nurses were so amazing when it came to the way they took care of my child and even me. Seeing them is what made me know this was a career to pursue.”
Managing her home and academic responsibilities came with a lifestyle change. “Currently for this semester I’m working part time so that I can focus more on my classes. I schedule time to study, to care for my kids, and I even schedule study time during breaks at work.” Her favorite fall season beverage is a Chai Latte from Dunkin Donuts (hot or cold) or ginger turmeric tea. “I like to spend time alone in a quiet place to refocus and center myself from the chaos life can bring because it helps me reset my goals.” Martina’s favorite film is Leap Year. She has a passion for romance movies such as Ever After with Drew Barrymore. Her second favorite all time movie is Pretty Woman because she loves the actress Julia Roberts.
