Kathryn Wilford is a student in the Bachelors of Nursing program who will be graduating in spring semester 2025! When asked what the Student Spotlight means to her, she says, “it shows her persistence at school, because it hasn’t always been the easiest. I enjoy coming to Plaza and learning about this field.” Kathryn has always been interested in the general arena of medicine. Having done a few internships at different hospitals and clinics she knew she wanted to be more hands on. “I wanted to be at the bedside giving physical and emotional care to patients, and that was my motivation to study nursing.” Attending Plaza College was a welcome change compared to her prior college experience. “I went to a big state school for my first undergraduate degree in biology. Nobody really knew who I was, but at Plaza they personally know you and they care about your success. Professors are willing to adapt for our learning if we request additional support.
Her most memorable moment at Plaza College was the day she became elected as President of the Student Nurses’ Association. “I love leadership and have been a leader in different capacities. I try to be kind to everyone and I appreciate that they trust me to lead them and do what’s best for them.” This semester, she looks forward to working with her cohort to host the SNA Halloween themed bake sale making raspberry and lemon bars, in addition to participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2024 Walk! Dr. Habeeb says, “Miss Kathryn Wilford is the epitome of professionalism, humility, class and compassion. At the very first encounter with Miss Wilford, it was very evident that she is a humanitarian who is very dedicated and committed to the service of others. Kathryn sees the good in everyone and is very kind, caring and supportive of her classmates, and students from the other cohorts. She conducts herself with grace, poise, and eloquence. I must confess it is indeed a blessing to track her growth from a junior nursing student to now being a senior in the nursing program, and President of the SNA. She is very instrumental in collaborating with SNA officers, her fellow classmates, and leaders of the Plaza College community to organize activities that will either promote awareness of health issues, or bring the students together. Because of Kathryn’s professional deportment and how well she relates to students and faculty, I view her as the Florence Nightingale of Plaza College Nursing Program, and I often address her as such. I am very convinced she is going to be a transformational nurse leader who will be well equipped to advance the nursing profession!”
Her dream job is to work overseas where there’s a lack of access to medicine. “I want to help support the building of this infrastructure and create access without people having to travel long distances.” Professor Makatura says, “Kathryn embodies the dedication of Florence Nightingale, blending academic excellence with unwavering compassion and initiative. Her journey through academia has not only enhanced her knowledge but also showcased her leadership capabilities, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her nursing education, her peers, and this program. This will undoubtedly shine through in her future nursing career, where she will continue to touch countless lives with her compassion, self-determination, and integrity. She truly embodies the essence of the nursing profession, and I am honored to be a part of her journey as an educator and mentor.”
Kathryn prioritizes her good grades by making sure she has the capacity to study. “I am cognizant of my energy levels. If I feel I’m not retaining anything I will take a break. It’s all about balance. If exams are coming up, I put my social life on hold. But I do make time for my friends, family, and church in between.” Her favorite fall beverage is apple cider char from Espresso77 in Jackson Heights. She also loves walking through central park to see the leaves change color. Her favorite wind down show to watch on Netflix is Monk because it’s light and funny.
