Plaza College proudly unveiled its state-of-the-art Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) medical simulation operating room—the first and only program of its kind in Queens. This $1 million facility offers an immersive learning experience, replicating real-world hospital environments for aspiring surgical technologists.
In a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local leaders, hospital representatives, students, staff, and faculty, Plaza showcased its commitment to addressing the critical shortage of skilled surgical staff. A highlight of the event was an inspiring address by Kaylee Venta, a senior Medical Assistant in orthopedic surgery at Northwell Health and now a student in the inaugural cohort of Plaza College’s Surgical Technology Program. Reflecting on her journey, Kaylee shared, “My experience as a senior Medical Assistant taught me invaluable lessons about dedication, patient care, and the critical importance of precision and teamwork. Transitioning into Plaza College’s Surgical Technology program felt like the perfect next step to expand my role in this field and maximize my impact in healthcare.”
Her heartfelt story, which received a near-standing ovation, exemplified the program’s transformative impact on students’ lives.
As New York City hospitals face unprecedented challenges, including staffing shortages that disrupt surgeries and delay procedures, Plaza College’s Surgical Technology Program is a vital solution. Provost Charles Callahan IV emphasized the college’s dedication to career-ready education, noting that this program will fill a growing need in an essential healthcare field. By empowering students with the skills to succeed in operating rooms, Plaza College continues to play a key role in strengthening New York’s healthcare system while creating meaningful career opportunities.
